Do you suffer from Facebook Depression?
Doctors from the American Academy of Pediatrics have published a report which suggests that Facebook can make vulnerable teens more prone to depression.- The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents and Families is published in April 2011 Pediatrics Journal.
Acceptance and contact with your peers is very important for teens and if you already feel isolated and lonely the fact that you have only a few “friends” on FB could make you feel depressed. One of the authors of the report Dr OKeeffe said :
“It can be more painful than sitting alone in a crowded school cafeteria or other real-life encounters that can make kids feel down, because Facebook provides a skewed view of what’s really going on. Online, there’s no way to see facial expressions or read body language that provide context.”
However, an opposing view is provided by Dr John Grohol in his blog post Pediatrics gets it wrong about Facebook Depression where he quotes from other research that shows the use of Social media sites can, in fact, lead to less depression
What do you think from your experience of using Social Media?
